Create a page template

This page applies to:MindTouch (current)

MindTouch comes with a list of default page templates but allows you to create your own custom page templates. Page templates provide authors with a consistent way of laying out new articles. Use page templates to create your own personal layout for pages such as FAQs, troubleshooting articles, API documentation, product guides and more. Templates can only be created and edited by administrators, authors and editors.

Future changes to templates only apply to new pages. Template updates will not apply retroactively to already existing pages.

How to create a page template

Step 1: Create your template

  1. From the MindTouch toolbar, select Site tools > Dashboard.

  1. Under Content management, click Template directory.

  1. From the MindTouch toolbar, select New.

For ease of template management, we recommend creating a blank template named Template:<Your Company Name> under which to create your template groups and templates. In the above list, for example, the pages Template:Custom and Views are blank templates that help organize our templates.

Step 2: Name your template

  1. Give your page template a name.
  2. Add your template content (i.e. formatted headers, text, author instructions, etc.) and click Save.

Do not make changes to any of the templates in the /Template:MindTouch hierarchy. MindTouch templates are overwritten weekly and any changes made to templates in that hierarchy are unsupported and may break your site.

Step 3:  Make your template a New Page template

To ensure your content authors can access your templates through the new Page dialog, follow these steps:

  1. Locate your existing template and click the pencil icon.
  2. In the template properties dialog, update your title if necessary and add a template description.
  3. Select the New Page radio button and click Update template properties.

Step 4: Verify your New Page template

  1. Verify your custom template is designated as a New Page template in the templates list.
