SEO and indexing basics

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a collection of best practices to improve the ranking of webpages on search engine results pages (SERP) for organic search results. Better SERP rankings help your current and potential customers find your content and increase your organic search traffic. SEO best practices are constantly evolving as technology and user behavior change.

A website index is a list of all webpages that a search engine knows about. Indexing, or crawling, is the process for how search engines such as Google create a list of all known webpages. If your web content is not indexed by Google, it cannot appear on a Search Engine Results Page (SERP) when users search in Google. Although search engines use advanced technology to automatically find, crawl, and index your web content, there are extra steps you can take to ensure your content is indexed properly.

How do I know if my website is indexed?

The easiest way to see if your website is in the Google index is to search Google for "site:yourwebsite.com". The search results should contain all your web content that you expect to be indexed.

Can I make Google index my website faster?

The quickest way to ask Google to index a new website or new webpage is to search Google for "index my site".  You will see a dialog box with an option to submit your URL.

For Google to create a more complete index, you should submit a sitemap to Google. Advanced users can apply meta robots tags to improve indexing.
