A task rarely happens in isolation, and often users need to quickly refresh their memory or read up on a particular topic. Links are one of the most accommodating features you can provide for your users to gain quick access to additional information. Mindtouch allows you to add links, create external hyperlinks, and even link to specific sections within an article.
How to create a hyperlinked text
Step 1: Open the Link dialog
There are three ways to open the Link dialog. Use whichever method you feel most comfortable with:
- Highlight the text for which you would like to create a link and click the Link icon in the editor.
- Highlight your text, right-click it, and select Create Link from the context menu.
- Highlight your text and press Ctrl/Cmd+K to load the Link dialog. To remove a hyperlink, use Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+K.
Step 2: Search and select your link source
The Link dialog automatically searches the site based on the word you highlighted. If you haven't selected any text, it will create text using the full URL. MindTouch initially displays the top 10 results of your query. Don't see what you want to link to? Scroll to the bottom of the results and click show more.
Step 3: Browse and select your link source
If the search doesn't display the article you were expecting, click the Browse tab and navigate through the hierarchy to find the specific article or attachment you would like to link to or enter an external URL in the Link to text field .
You can also link to attachments through the Browse interface.
Step 4: Select an anchor or section to link to (optional)
After you've chosen the article you'd like to link to, you can then choose to link to specific section or header of that article. Sections are the headers within your article, while anchors are created by adding anchors to your text.
You may have to save your link before you are able to choose a header or section in the linked article.
Step 5: Choose how your link opens
Depending on the flow of your content and the learning experience you want to provide for your users, you may want to redirect your users to a new page or just have them open a quick contextual help dialog without leaving the page. Determine which link option works best for you:
- Default: When the user clicks your link, the linked content opens in the same window (overrides the original page). The user has to use the browser's back button to return to the original page. This option is best used at a point where users likely would be well informed about a specific topic or task and would benefit from exploring a new related topic or task.
- Open in new window: When the user clicks your link, the linked content opens in a new window. The user has to switch tabs to return to the original page. This option is best used if the linked content is extensive and itself contains several links the user may want to explore.
- Open in contextual help overlay: When the user clicks your link, the linked content opens in a contextual help window. The original page stays open, but the contextual window is displayed in the center of the page. This option is best used if the reader is looking to quickly review a topic or task or if a new topic or task can be comfortably displayed in a smaller window.
External links cannot be displayed as a contextual help window.
