Configure content IDs (TCS)


This tutorial reviews how to configure Content ID mapping so that a generic URL will resolve to an associated article.  This can be done through the control panel by Admin users.  


This tutorial explains how to use a generic url that will resolve to an article that you have mapped in the Content ID Manager.  


Accessing the Content ID Mapper

Admin users can access the Content ID Manager by going to Site Tools > Content ID Manager:


Content ID Definitions

To setup Content ID Mapping we need to establish a Content ID.  We can do this by adding an ID, which can be a string of letters, numbers, or a combination of both.  There is a 255 character limit for the length of a Content ID. In the sample below, "controlpanel" has been added to the ID field and a description has been added that explains more about the ID:

NOTE: When you update the description of a Content ID after creation, hit "Enter/Return" on your keyboard to save the update made to the Content ID's Description.


After adding the ID and the Description, click Add and it will be displayed in the table:


Once we have created Content IDs we need to create associations. The Content ID acts as the unique value that we add to the end of the MindTouchurl in the following format:

1.) Replace with your MindTouch site url

2.) Replace the 3 with the Content ID that you setup.  

3.) Associate the Content ID with an article so that when the the above url is entered it will resolve to an article.  

Manage Associations

To setup an association for a Content ID, click on the Associations Tab which will show you the following screen:


Here you will notice that the Path for the Content ID is blank.  We need to set the path for the article that we want to resolve.  We can do so by clicking on the pencil link the is in the far right column.

This will then present you with the association dialog for connecting the Content ID with an article in MindTouch.  There are two ways to associate a Content ID with an Article: Navigate and select, or Search.  Below are examples of both steps.

Associate via Navigation

The first option for Association is to use the Navigation that is presented in the dialog.  You can expand the hierarchy to locate the article that you want to associate.  In the example below I've selected "SmartTouch 4G Battery Life" as the article that I want to associate. Click Use Selected.  This will then connect the Content ID "sample" with "SmartTouch 4G Battery Life." 

NOTE: If a user attempts to navigate to a page with a non-existent content ID, then the content ID will be generated with a name of 'DEFAULT.' This is needed in order to redirect users back to the homepage.


Associate via Search

The other way you can associate is to search for an article in MindTouch and associate the Content ID with that article.  To do so, click on the Search Tab and then enter a search term (Battery) and click on the Search button.  This will return a set of results that you can select from and then click Use Selected:



Testing the Content ID mapping

Once you have associated the Content ID with an article you will see it mapped in the Associations tab:


Now that it is associated we can test it out and confirm it resolves.  To do so we will append the following to our MindTouch site:


so that if your site is then you would have the following:

When you do this you will see that it will redirect to the page that you associated.

Filtering Content IDs

You have the ability to filter the Content IDs at the top of either tab by entering a search term or unchecking the Show mapped or Show unmapped.  As you add more Content IDs, this will make it easier to filter out what Content IDs still need associations.  




If the Content IDs are not loading, the issue most likely has to do with a JavaScript error. Use your browser's developer tool (such as inspect element on Chrome) to find the error.
